His dad said he had something to do with raising the flag...

It's among the most famous images ever taken of the American military.Almost everyone knows the photograph..but until James Bradley wrote the book, Flags of Our Fathers, not many really knew the story behind it -- the story of the flag raisers in the World War II battle of Iwo Jima. Bradley was interested in rescuing the story from oblivion because his father, John, was one of the six men immortalized that February day in 1945; however, it was something the elder Bradley would never talk about and so after his father died, James set out to find out why he had been so silent.

What's coming down the road...

In 2004, journalist Dave Iverson received the same news that had been delivered to his father and older brother years earlier: He had Parkinson's disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that affects about one million Americans. In this FRONTLINE and ITVS joint production, Iverson sets off on a personal journey to explore the scientific, ethical, and political debate that surrounds Parkinson's, a disease at the center of the ongoing controversy over embryonic stem cell research. Iverson talks to scientists on the cutting edge of new cures and therapies -- not only for Parkinson's, but a number of other major neurological conditions. And he has conversations with fellow Parkinson's sufferers like actor Michael J. Fox and writer Michael Kinsley...9pm

What happens when you go searching for ART...

The premiere of KACV's newest local production is tonight at 7...and it sets the bar fairly high in the stated purpose of the show. That is to seek out fine art right here in our community, art and artists who bring something different to the conversation, and then capture some essence of that art to be shared with others...an elusive goal indeed.
The first episode brings together local talent Doug Storey and Jim Gardner with world renowned musician and composer Mike Garson for "Sonata for Clarinet," taped recently at St. Andrews Church in front of a live audience. Garson is very well known for his decades of work with David Bowie, and that influence stands out in his work...bringing the avant-garde experience to the Panhandle stretches our perceptions and interests. Perfect for artZONE.

Do we have the right to end our lives if life itself becomes unbearable, or when we enter the late stages of painful, terminal illness? The questions, debated for centuries, have only grown more pressing in recent years as medical technology has allowed us to live longer lives, and several U.S. states have legalized physician-assisted suicide. A few weeks ago, John Lennon would have been 70-years old...

December 8 of this year he's been dead for 30 years. Yet, his art still haunts us. It still speaks to millions of people. This film confirms Lennon as an American artist. It is, essentially, a classic immigrant tale: Lennon and Ono left London in 1971 in search of freedom, both artistic and personal. We hear Lennon's song New York City and follow into their life -- their commitment to peace and political activism, their struggles to remain in America and, of course, the greatest music from that period and the concert footage from Lennon's first two albums, Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. With unprecedented and exclusive cooperation from Yoko Ono, access to never-before-seen material from the Lennon archives and conversations with those closest to him -- Ono, Elton John, the photographer Bob Gruen, Ringo Starr -- AMERICAN MASTERS tells John Lennon's story as it has never been told before -- and as it will never be told again...8pm

The MAD MEN were real...and their work still shapes our culture.

This film, about advertising and inspiration, reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time -- people who've profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising's "creative revolution" of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others were responsible for "Just Do It," "I Love NY, " "Where's the Beef?," "Got Milk," "Think Different," and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. "I coulda been somebody, I coulda been a contenda"

An iconic line from "On the Waterfront", by director Elia Kazan. His name was brought front and center to the world again during the buzz and build-up to the March 1999 Academy Awards. Elia Kazan was to be recognized with an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement, an honor that divided Hollywood and fueled social commentary across the country. Then 89 years old and best remembered for his film directing in the 1950s -- On the Waterfront, East of Eden, A Streetcar Named Desire, Gentleman's Agreement, A Face in the Crowd --Kazan remained a controversial figure. To many, he was personally and permanently emblematic of the sin of "naming names" before HUAC in the darkest days of the Hollywood Blacklist. To others, his extraordinary body of work deserved honors, despite any questionable behavior. One of his strongest supporters was Martin Scorsese, the director of this documentary. The Most Dangerous Man in America on POV...

Why would a dedicated Cold War strategist throw away his career, his friends and risk life in prison for a chance to help end the Vietnam War? In 1971, Daniel Ellsberg, a leading military planner, concluded that America's role in the war was based on decades of lies. He leaked the Pentagon Papers, 7,000 pages of top-secret documents, to The New York Times, a daring act of conscience that led to Watergate, President Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War. "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers" is a tale told by Ellsberg with a who's who of Vietnam and Watergate-era figures...8pm

Searching for "somewhere I could point my camera into pure space, "

award-winning photographer Murray Fredericks began making annual solo camping trips to remote Lake Eyre and its salt flats in South Australia. These trips have yielded remarkable photos of a boundless, desolate yet beautiful environment where sky, water and land merge. Made in collaboration with documentary filmmaker Michael Angus, "Salt" is the film extension of Fredericks' work at Lake Eyre, interweaving his photos and video diary with time-lapse sequences to offer viewers the liberating and disorienting experience of being thrown into an infinite dimension of mind and spirit. "Salt" will be accompanied by a selection of shorts: Ellen Frick's "A Healing Art" delves into the world of artificial eye makers as they rekindle hope for victims of tragedy; and animated shorts from the Peabody Award-winning oral-history project StoryCorps These shorts capture the stories of everyday Americans in their own voices...POV...11pm

Baseball's been very good to me!

As Sammy Sosa would say as he chased the home run record in the late 90's, and truer words were never spoken. In the first decade of the 21st century, baseball is booming. In an age of home runs and power, Pedro Martinez and a handful of other superb pitchers still manage to dominate. The astonishingly talented right fielder Ichiro Suzuki becomes MLB's first Japanese position player and a hero back home. As America reels from the horror of the 9/11 attacks, baseball provides solace, and in an incredible World Series, gives the country something to cheer about. As the rivalry between the Yankees and the Red Sox reaches the boiling point, long-suffering Boston fans rejoice in their first World Series victory in 86 years, while Giants and Cubs fans endure devastating losses. Barry Bonds demolishes Mark McGwire's home-run record and sets his sights on Henry Aaron's revered all time mark. The game is more popular than ever, but revelations about steroids cast a shadow on many of the era's greatest stars and their historic accomplishments.

Hey-battuh-battuh-battuh...

Thousands of bats, three home run records and one "curse" have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America's national pastime with his 1994 series BASEBALL. Now, Burns and co-director Lynn Novick update the series with THE TENTH INNING. Beginning with a crippling strike that alienated millions of fans and brought the game to the brink, this film tells the tumultuous story of our national pastime up to the present. It celebrates baseball's new Golden Age -- an era of unprecedented home run totals, popularity and prosperity -- and sheds light on one of the game's darkest chapters -- the steroid era. The film examines the compelling stories of Joe Torre, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki, Cal Ripken Jr. and Barry Bonds and features insightful commentary from an eclectic lineup of writers, broadcasters, fans and all-stars...7pm
